Hell Riding

Power bar, power gels, salt, sodium, H20, whatever you name it, it's all insufficient to go on for a weekend, 4 stages and 60 kilometres at Kajang / Semenyih PCC Presidential Ride 2006. I overheard a rider asking me whether he can cycle up the hills. I told him right on the spot that he wouldn't be riding up hills. Heheheh. I am not scaring him off isn't it? Everyone is walking. Bike and hike session is just neccessary when the hills to climb are technical and need more than your usual power-ups on loose rocks, ruts and uneven terrain.

I am already taking my time at Stage 1 spinning happily knowing that I will be walking at the hills later. It was a long queue initially and several hard nut were seen on their nanny rings, cranking hard to a grandmother hill, which showed no mercy to all riders. After 10 kilometres of climbing, it's finally time to ride down. We were blasting down a singletrack which lasted for 2-3 kilometres.

It wasn't really crucial to refill bottles and snacking food when the ride is not even one quarter of the length yet. My supplies are still heavy at the rear. I rode on into hell. It was much easy on stage 2. The climb up stage 2 left many cramping though. It was shady and the scene was nice here (I find this trail the easiest of it all). I slipped off some roots here and expected some harder singletrack to roll on in the next stage.

We were at checkpoint 2 at sometime before noon and that was the time, the sun is all up and supplies are already running dry for most riders. We refilled and went on towards stage 3 (more hell). The cramps are getting heavier here as there were more climbs. James was telling me it will be easier at stage 3 (darn good liar). The climb here is still difficult and reminded me of hills at Kota Tinggi with the ups and downs neverending. I took a break here and saw Azhar and Zul. Both of them were still moving, not really dead, but just darn lazy to go up the hills. It was at a later downhill section where I crashed badly.

Most riders will remember that steep and deep downhill I suppose. I can see riders walking down it but I choose to ride down. That's dumb. In fact, after riding down happily, I am already rolling down. Worst kind of endo ever. I rolled (uncountable times), far enough (to think of heaven) and blacked out for few seconds after my bike landed on my head.

Got out after checkpoint 3. It was a real shame being unable to finish the ride. I am supposed to do the chicken loop here but bumped into Rhys (MTB e-Zone) who became my hero for the day. The ice-chilled 100plus he offered me was the best ever 100plus in my life. Nothing tasted that good after a long day!

...that was not the end of the day. I had crab and seafood dinner at Teluk Gong.
(to be continued)
* will be posting photos soon.
